Designed by Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) the sensational Vasari Corridor in Florence was meant as a princely skywalk offering both a pleasurable promenade and an adequate escape route to the Medici family. The Vasari Corridor connects the Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria on the north side of the Arno River with the newer and more prestigious residence, the spectacular Pitti Palace, that Cosimo I de’ Medici and his wife Eleonora di Toledo had purchased in 1549 on the south side of the river.
It superbly continues through the Uffizi Palace, another remarkable work by Giorgio Vasari and, before crossing the world-famous Ponte Vecchio, supported by a harmonious sequence of elegant round-headed arcades, it forms a right-angled bend and then passes over the upper part of the eastern side of the bridge, which enabled the ruling family to safely reach their residence in the Pitti Palace, without even being seen by their subjects.
The Vasari Corridor, one of the wonders of Florentine Renaissance architecture, is almost one mile long and was built in 1565 in an amazingly short period of time: just five months! Nowadays it can be considered a sort of cultural umbilical cord, due to the fact that it provides an ideal connection between two extraordinary pulsing organisms both full of artworks: the Uffizi Gallery, which we also visit extensively on this tour, and the Palatine Gallery, housed on the first floor of the Pitti Palace.
The Vasari Corridor is a magnificent museum in itself as it contains a unique collection of artists’ self-portraits along with a rich selection of international paintings from the XVII and XVIII centuries.
This visit can become the true highlight of your visit to Florence, because even though many travellers may have visited Florence on several occasions, most of them will not have had the opportunity of walking through this extraordinary aerial passageway.
