Green Walk: San Giovanni QuarterThis tour starts from Piazza della Repubblica - the very center of Florence - and proceeds northwards towards the religious centre, which consists of both Piazza di San Giovanni, with the Romanesque Baptistery, and Piazza del Duomo, dominated by the soaring Dome constructed under Brunelleschi’s supervision and crowning the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore, flanked to the right of the splendid façade by the elegant Giotto’s Belltower. After a detailed description of the bronze doors of the Baptistery and of the interior of the Cathedral we continue towards the Basilica San Lorenzo, Palazzo Medici and completing the visit of this Quarter at Piazza SS. Annunziata, where once again in his hometown Filippo Brunelleschi created a highly rationalised space at disposal of his fellow citizens: the Hospital of the Innocents, a wonderful Early Renaissance building, serving as a horphanage in Quattrocento Florence.
